EDO NQ in the news

The Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland (EDO NQ) doesn't shrink from the task of holding governments and industry accountable.

In acting for clients who are passionate protectors of the environment such as the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC), EDO NQ is an effective advocate.

Watch this 7:30 News documentary about the threats to the Great Barrier Reef to gain insight into the invaluable role which EDO NQ plays in helping to protect the Great Barrier Reef, and all the other wonderful environments throughout tropical Northern Queensland (Note: At the time this item was recorded (16 April 2013), EDO NQ had one environmental law solicitor. Subsequently the Federal Attorney-General increased our funding by 350%. As a result of this recognition of the importance and effectiveness of the work that EDO NQ does, two additional environmental lawyers were appointed to staff.

However, as a result of the 17 December 2013 Abbott Government decision to defund EDO NQ, this critical core of environmental advocates is at risk. Help keep us strong, so that we can both help you and train even more dedicated environmental lawyers to aid with the sustainable management of Northern Queensland's World Heritage Areaa-rich environment. Almost every week there is an announcement about a major development (industrial, port, tourism, agri-business, resort, casino etc) on the Northern Queensland coast immediately adjoining the Great Barrier Reef.

Some have likened this to a 'Death By a Thousand Cuts' process.
